Townsville, the largest city in North Queensland with a population of 200,000. Townsville is located on the eastern coast of Queensland, with Magnetic Island and the Great Barrier Reef to the east, historic Charters Towers and outback Queensland to the west.

Townsville’s weather

Australia is a huge country with enormous climatic differences. The weather in the north of Australia is hot and tropical, while southern areas may experience extremely cold winters with snow falls in the mountains.

Because Townsville is not far from the equator, the weather is warm to hot throughout the year.

The hottest months are also the wettest months. This means that from November to April the weather is very hot and humid with daytime temperatures averaging around 30 – 33 degrees.

We sometimes experience cyclones during the summer months. Although they can be severe, there are strict procedures and safety precautions that all residents undertake.

From May through to September is considered to be the 'holiday season' or the best time to be in North Queensland. The daytime temperatures average approximately 25 – 26 degrees with clear sunny skies and night time temperatures that are refreshing and cool.

North Queensland is considered by many to be a 'tropical paradise’ with tourists from all over the world visiting the many attractions that it is famous for. The peak tourist season is winter. During your stay make an effort to visit the Great Barrier Reef and Magnetic Island as well as our beautiful beaches. Spend some time at historic Charters Towers, tropical Cairns, and Atherton Tablelands which are only a few hours by car from Townsville.
