Guidance officer

 

​Annandale State School has a guidance officer (GO) at the school on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays each week. Our school guidance officer is Mrs Mary Le Feuvre.

Role of guidance officer is to;

  • Provide professional expertise, leadership and support to school communities and network agencies in the development and implement of plans, programs, and procedures to assist students in achieving positive educational, developmental and lifelong learning outcomes.

  • Collaboratively negotiate, develop and implement programs for students that have a focus on preventative and early intervention strategies; are responsive to identified personal, social, emotional and educational needs; and aim to foster resilience and personal skills development.

  • Advocate, provide counselling, psycho-educational assessment and/or individual student support, recommendations and advice to students, teachers and parents concerning educational and mental wellbeing issues.

Referrals

Referral to the guidance officer requires a signed parent permission.

Where a teacher has an ongoing concern about a student;

  • The teacher is required to raise these concerns with the appropriate Deputy Principal, providing background information regarding their concerns, these concerns may have already been discussed with the student's parent.

  • Where the Deputy Principal is unable to resolve the issues, the student is referred to the school's Student Support Group, the GO is a member of the group.

  • If the Student Support Group recommends GO involvement, consultation occurs with the student's parent(s), GO, Learning Support teacher and where relevant school administration.

  • A parental consent form is completed.

  • The student is placed on the GO's prioritised list, with a progress letter posted to the student's parents. GO intervention /support occurs at the earliest opportunity.

  • A progress summary given to parents and school staff via letter/email and a written report provided to stakeholders after assessment is complete.

  • Face to face discussions with parents and staff is provided.
